Note Joomla 3.6 is not the current version; the current release of Joomla is 5.1.2. Getting there might be a challenging task but see below for the documentation.

From 1.5x to 3.x see https://docs.joomla.org/Portal:Upgrading_Versions/en

To move to Joomla 4, you can only migrate from 3.10.x: see https://docs.joomla.org/Joomla_3.x_to_4 ... _Migration

For Joomla 5 you can migrate from Joomla 4: see https://docs.joomla.org/Joomla_4.4.x_to ... ep_by_Step

I'm not sure why the "change password" method didn't work. Did you copy in the Hashed password and not simply your actual password (as per the examples given in that documentation)? Couldn't you use the "lost password" function? Or Direct editing, and change the password (make sure you use the "hashed" code to change the password as described in that documentation or Adding a new super user?

It might be simpler in the end, to start over from scratch on Joomla 5 which is the most modern and secure version which runs on the more modern and secure server infrastructure.

Alternatively there may be migration tools (paid or otherwise) on the JED that might be useful:
https://extensions.joomla.org/extension/sp-upgrade/ (take a look at others on the JED).
