As with any website, if you have a hyperlink e.g. to abc.html, but change the file name (but not the link) to efg.html, then you will have a broken link since abc.html doesn't exist any longer, and you will get the 404 Not Found error.
I assume you mean by 'custom article' an HTML page external to Joomla, because all content within Joomla is dynamic, as in, it is saved in the database and the pages are generated on the fly when you request the page (i.e. click a hyperlink to an article from a menu).
